Abstract
Genre Based Approach is an approach to language teaching. It has the purpose to build students’ competence in language both in oral and written. The purpose of this research are to describe and analyze how the implementation of Genre Based Approach (GBA) in teaching of writing recount text at class VIII of MTsN Kota Solok and to find out the problems are faced by the teacher in implementing genre based approach teaching of writing recount text. The researcher focused the research on the implementation of GBA in teaching writing recount text at class VIII of MTsN Kota Solok. In this research, the writer used case-study research design. The writer focused attention on a single entity, i.e. the implementation of GBA in teaching of writing at Islamic Junior High School Kota Solok that would be analyzed on its practicality. The instruments that were used in this research were observation sheet and interview sheet. The data which was got from the observation was analyzed by using thematic analysis. They were transcribing data from interview, writing up data from observation, Familiarizing and summarizing the data, Coding the data, Displaying the result of coding in a table, Identifying the or pattern, Drawing conclusion, and reporting. The result of the research showed that the process of teaching writing at class VIII of MTsN Kota Solok did not match with the theory of GBA yet. It was seen from the observation sheet result. The English teacher knows what GBA is, but she did not apply GBA principles in her class appropriately. Generally, all the stages in GBA had been implemented, but the English teacher still found problems in implementing it. Based on the interview, the teacher said that the problems in implementing genre based approach were dominant caused by the students, so the teacher blamed the problems because her students who had many problems in studying English. Finally, it is recommended that the English teacher should implement GBA in teaching of writing recount text appropriately to achieve the goal of language teaching. Although it was difficult to carry out the activities based GBA, it is the teacher’s role to encourage the students to be more active. To do so, the support from all components such as headmasters, other teachers, and environment is also needed.
