Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on critical thinking skills reflected in the oral communication of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Pesisir Selatan. The research employed a quasi-experimental design. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students, totaling 166 students across six classes. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling, with class VII F serving as the experimental group and class VII G as the control group. The research instruments included an oral communication test and a critical thinking skills observation sheet. A pre-test were administered to measure the students’ initial abilities, while a post-test assessed their improvement after the implementation of PBL. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. The results showed that the average post-test score in the experimental class was higher (80.75) than the control class (57.10). A paired sample t-test revealed a significance value of 0.00 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of PBL on students’ critical thinking skills. Additionally, observation results showed improvement in five critical thinking skill indicators, with the highest scores on “evaluate information” and “ability to make well-reasoned decisions” (75%) and the lowest scores on “ability to analyze arguments” and “clear communication of ideas or solutions” (65%). It can be concluded that the PBL model was effective in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills as reflected in their oral communication.
