Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the “talking chips technique” on the speaking ability of class VIII students of MTsN Padang Panjang. Speaking is an important skill in language learning, yet many students struggle with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and fluency. The Talking Chips technique, a cooperative learning strategy, encourages active student participation by organizing turns in discussion. This study used a quantitative experimental research design, with class VIII J as the experimental group and class VIII I as the control group. A total of 60 students participated, equally divided into the two groups. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and analyzed using statistical methods. The main instrument of this study was a speaking test. The data from both tests were analyzed for normality and homogeneity using SPSS 29, then the researcher analyzed the t-test using the formula. The results showed a significant improvement in speaking ability among students taught with Talking Chips technique. In the experimental group, the pre-test mean score was 59.33, which increased to 63.06 in the post-test. In contrast, the control group had a pre-test mean score of 58.8, which increased to 61.66 in the post-test. The standard deviation for the experimental group decreased from 15.09 to 14.71, indicating a more consistent improvement in performance. This means that the hypothesis is accepted. So, it can be proven that the use of Talking Chips technique is effective on students' speaking ability in teaching eighth grade speaking skills at MTsN Padang Panjang.
