Abstract
Writing is one of the skills must be learn by the students. Teaching writing at State Islamic Junior High School 3 Pasaman taught by using Genre Based Approach. Descriptive and recount text are types of genres which should be mastered by the students of State Islamic Junior High School 3Pasaman on writing skill. The research is to analyze the students’ skill Junior High School 3 Pasaman in writing descriptive and recount texts, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic. The analysis also focused on student’s mastery on generic structure of descriptive and recount texts. This research was descriptive research. There ware 243 students of class VIII at State Islamic Junior High School 3 Pasaman. To get the data the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The research has taken 15% of population or 6 students for each class as sample of the research. Instrument of this research was written test form paragraph by giving ten topics about descriptive and recount texts. In this test, the students choose one of them to be described. The result of the test analyzed with assessment criterion by Jacob (1981: 90). Based on the result of the test found that the mean score of students based on components writing is 56.63 for descriptive and 53.7 for recount. The score indicated that most students cannot yet reach minimum Achievement Criteria (MAC) specified by school that is 75. For the each component, got mean score, that for content, descriptive is16.72, and recount is 17.19, for organization, descriptive is 14.61, and recount is 13.80, for vocabulary, descriptive is 13.8, and recount is 14.13, for the language use, descriptive is 9.44 and recount is 6.47, for mechanics, descriptive is 2.27, and recount is 2.11.While the students’ skill on generic of structures of descriptive text is 2.55 for identification, and 1.33 for description. Whereas the students’ skill on generic structure of recount text is 2.02 for the orientation, 1.83 for the series of event, and 0.83 for the reorientation. Based on the result of student writing form paragraph analysis and supported with test arrangement sentences, hence difficulty of students are in find the equal vocabulary and language use mastery in English. From the writing can be concluded that the component of writing and generic structure on descriptive text that haven’t mastered. Thus, it was concluded that the students writing skill at class VIII of State Islamic Junior High School 3 Pasaman still require to be improved. Suggested to English teacher to improve the student writing skill, and also assist them to write down ideas on writing descriptive and recount texts.
