Abstract
Students at class VIII of Junior High School 3 Gunung Talang had low of writing ability. It was caused by their low of knowledge and ability in understanding five components of writing skill (content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic). Among the components, content is the most difficult component of students’. They did not understand how to express their ideas. Therefore, to improve the quality of learning, it needs some efforts to make learning more effective, such as by applying an appropriate technique. Pair Work Technique can be an alternative solution to help the teacher to solve the problem. The current research study investigated whether Pair Work Technique gave significant effect towards students’ writing skill at eight grades of Junior High School 3 Gunung Talang. The design of this research was Experimental Research Design. This research was located at Junior High School 3 Gunung Talang and the population was VIII class students who were taught by the same teacher and consist of 90 students and distributed into four classes. The sample which consists of 44 students distributed into two classes, it was chosen through cluster random sampling technique. The two classes were decided to be Experimental Class (VIII A: 22 students) and Control Class (VIII B: 22 students). The experimental class was taught by using Pair Work Technique, while control class was taught as they had usually been taught by their English teacher. The data of this research were collected by using written test. The test was given after doing treatments for six meetings to determine the significant effect of using Pair Work Technique towards students’ writing skill. The result of the research showed in post test, the researcher found that mean score of experimental class (71,52) was higher than the mean score of control class (63,06). Therefore, it calculated (3,34) was bigger than t-table (1,68). Moreover, each component of writing had improved. Statistically, it showed that teaching by using Pair Work Technique gave improvement for students writing skill. It can be concluded that Pair Work Technique was effective to improve students writing skill in recount text and got positive responses from students. Therefore, English teacher can use Pair Work Technique in teaching writing of recount text.
