Abstract
ABSTRACT FarhatunLayali. 2018. The Effect of Oral Presentation Technique To Improve Students’ Speaking Ability In Descriptive Text At Class X State Vocational High School Kota Solok Speaking is a tool used by people in changing knowledge, information, ideas, opinion and feeling. But, Students at class X of Vocational High School 1 Solok had weak abilities in speaking. The difficulties that the students faced in speaking was caused by some factors, internal factors of the students themselves and the inappropriate technique that used by English teacher in teaching speaking process. For solving the students’ problems in teaching speaking, the researcher applied technique namely Oral Presentation to improve students’ skill in speaking. The study investigated whether Oral Presentation technique was effective to improve students’ speaking skill, and identified students’ responses on the use of Oral Presentation Technique. Pre-experimental research was used in this study. The population of this research was all of class X students of State Vocational High School 1 Solok which consists of 130 students and divided into four classes(X AK1,X AK2,X AK3,X AP 1). Then, by using Cluster Random Sampling the researcher took class X AK1 as the sample (experimental class) that consists of 33 students. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test for them in the classroom. Before giving treatment, the researcher gave pre-test to experimental class. Pre-test was given to see the ability of the students in speaking before post-test. Then, post-test was given after doing treatments for six meetings to investigate of using Oral Presentation technique in developing students’ speaking skill. The result of study showed that the mean score of students’ speaking in post-test was 61.24 higher than the mean score of students’ speaking in pre-test was 50.24. Meanwhile, t-calculate was 17.24also bigger than t-table was 1.66. Moreover, each components of speaking had improved. It was seen from the comparison of students’ mean scores in pre-test and post-test. Statistically, it was shown that teaching speaking by using Oral Presentation technique improved students’ speaking skill. Finally, it is recommended: The English teacher may determine the use of Oral Presentation Technique as one of technique in teaching speaking. Then, for other researcher, it is suggested to carry out further studies about the use of Oral Presentation technique and the other technique in developing students’ speaking skill.
