Abstract
This study was based on the phenomenon that most students in Senior High School IX Padang were afraid to speak English. They were unable to arrange events or actions when asked to retell past experience. Based on the phenomenons above, it needs an appropriate technique namely Socio Drama Technique in improving students speaking skill. Socio Drama technique changes the passive students into active students. Socio Drama technique is needed to encourage students in participating actively. Socio drama as one of teaching method, students can try speak English easily because they memorize dialogue which has been prepared by them before. This is the first step for students to improve their speaking skill. Unlike simple role playing, socio drama employs many special action methods to deepen and broaden the enactment. The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of Socio Drama Technique toward students’ speaking skill in telling their past experience at tenth grade students at State Senior High School IX Padang. The researcher did the experiment of Socio Drama technique In order to know the effect of Socio Drama Technique. It was necessary to describe Accent, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. The population of this research was all of the students at tenth grade at state Senior High School IX Padang that consist of 47 students. It was spread into two classes. The sample of this research was same as the number of population. It was taken by cluster random sampling. The sample classes were taken by flipping the coin. The result shown that class X MIA consist of 23 students as experimental class and class X MIA consist of 24 students as control. The main point of this technique was to determine the topic. In collecting the data, researcher used speaking test only. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after doing the treatments for six meetings to know the effect of Socio Drama Technique. 2 The data were analyzed by using statistical procedures and service solution. T- was used to analyze the students’ post-test scores. The result of t-test (t calculate 1 test ) was compared with t at degree of freedom 50 and the level of significant 5% (0.05). The result of this research showed that mean scores of students’ speaking in experiment class (77.26) was higher than the mean scores of students’ speaking in control class (68.38). It means that teaching speaking by using Socio Drama technique gave significant difference on students’ speaking skill. While, t (3.74) is also bigger than t (1.684). It means that testing the Hypothesis was accepted. Moreover, three components of speaking in experimental class was also Improve. But the components were mostly improve was vocabulary with significant different 3.76 and with comparison 22.09 (experimental class) and 18.33 (control class). table Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that Socio Drama Technique improved students’ speaking skill in telling past experience at Class X MIA of State Senior High School IX Padang.Socio Drama Technique gave advantage in speaking English. Researcher suggested the Socio Drama Technique in teaching speaking for getting significant effect on students’ speaking skill.
