Abstract

This study was conducted based on the need to improve students’ listening comprehension, as listening instruction in many EFL classrooms is still delivered through conventional passive activities that do not adequately support learners’ cognitive processing of spoken texts. Grounded in listening theory as an active bottom-up and top-down process and in meaningful learning theory through concept mapping proposed by Novak (2016), this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using concept maps in teaching listening. The research employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 36 students of class XII F2 at MAN 1 Padang. The instruments were multiple-choice and short answer listening comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment, in which concept maps were integrated into the pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening stages. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired-samples t-tests. The findings revealed that the mean score increased from 71.03 in the pretest to 85.83 in the posttest, and the t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between students’ listening performance before and after the treatment. These results demonstrate that the use of concept maps effectively enhances students’ listening comprehension by supporting the organization, connection, and retention of spoken information, indicating that concept mapping is a beneficial visual strategy for improving listening instruction in EFL classrooms.
