Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the TikTok application on students' speaking skills. With the increasing popularity of TikTok as a social media platform widely used by students, this study focuses on the effectiveness of TikTok towards students’ speaking skills. This study used a quasi-experimental research design with a post-test-only design. The sample of the study consisted of 76 students, consisting of an experimental class and a control class, both from phase F, selected through a cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected through a speaking test with assessment criteria from Hughes. The results showed a significant difference in the speaking performance between the two groups. The experimental class, which was taught using the TikTok application, obtained a higher average score (74.78) compared to the control class (67.86). Notable differences were observed in aspects such as accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Among these, vocabulary showed the highest gap, with a difference of 2.22 points. Furthermore, the statistical analysis revealed that the t-value (3.35) was higher than the t-table value, and the significance level (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.002, which is less than 0.05. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of TikTok is effective in improving students’ speaking skills in English
