Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' critical thinking skills in the perspective of the Merdeka curriculum in writing descriptive texts in class XI MAS AL-Falah. This research method is a mixed method researcher combined from two designs (qualitative and quantitative research). In collecting data, researchers used document analysis (to find out the teacher's concept), class observation (to find out the process of developing students' critical thinking skills in writing), interview for more information, and writing tests (to find out the average score of students in writing descriptive texts). The population in this study was class XI MAS Al-Falah Padang. Consisting of 4 classes; the total population was 66 students. Researchers used a total sampling technique. The results of the analysis of the Ajar teacher module documents show that the process of writing descriptive texts in class XI MAS Al-Falah students is in the phase of analyzing descriptive texts. In the process of developing students' critical thinking skills based on the results of class observations, the teacher uses several stages, in the first stage the teacher helps students build knowledge about descriptive texts. The second teacher presents descriptive texts to achieve the goals of descriptive texts. Third, students and teachers work together to write descriptive texts. Based on teachers’ interviewed in developing critical thinking skill several students have good in developing their critical thinking and another students doesn’t achieved the good category, this is caused by several factors such as the students lack of information, lack of vocabulary, not liking the material and so on.. Finally, the researcher asks students to write their own descriptive texts. The data shows that the average value of the descriptive text writing ability of class XI students at MAS Al-Falah Padang was 77. It can be concluded that the critical thinking ability in the perspective of the Merdeka curriculum of class XI students of MAS Al-Falah Padang has a good value.
