Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is any significant difference on students’ writing ability between the students who are taught by using Hero Quest Strategy and those who are taught without using Hero Quest Strategy (by conventional one) at class X of Senior High School 1 Gunung Talang, Solok. This research was experimental research, The population of this study was all of the students at class X IPS of Senior High School 1 Gunung Talang, Solok. That consist of 177 students were divided into five classes. The research took the sample by using cluster sampling. The result was class XIPS2 as experimental class than consist of 35 students and XIPS3 as control class that consist of 35 students. In collecting the data, researcher used written test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, post-test was given after doing treatments for five meetings to determine the effect of using Hero Quest Strategy. Using statistical procedures, T- was used to analyze the students’ post-test score. The results of research showed the mean score of experiment class is 74.71 with standard deviation 7.3. While mean score of control class is 68.6 with standard deviation is 6.6. From the calculation of the result of the test, it was indicated that t calculate was 5.1 and t was higher than t table table ii test 1.667 with α = 0.05 and degree of freedom 68. So, the t (5.1>1.667). Moreover, each component of writing both of classes were different. Statistically, it is showed that teaching writing by using Hero Quest Strategy gives significant difference on students’ writing ability. It can be concluded that Hero Quest Strategy gives significant effect toward students’ writing ability especially in considering five components of writing. So, this strategy can be recommended for English teacher and should consider the use of Hero Quest Strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching writing.
