Abstract
The background of this research was the most of students at class VIII of State Junior High 4 Gunung Talang were anxious in speaking English . They were fear to ask and give their opinion and perform it in front of the class. The research aimed to describe dominant factors affecting students’ anxiety and to find out the reason of the students’ anxious in Speaking English at class VIII of State Junior High 4 Gunung Talang. This research was descriptive research type. There were 152 students of class eight of Junior High School 4 Gunung Talang in academic year 2018/ 2019 as population of the research. Simple random sampling technique was used to choose the sample. This research taken 15% of population or 5 students for each class as sample of the research, it was 25 students. Instrument of this research was the anxiety questionnaire which was adapted from Horwitz. It consisted of 33 items scoring with likerts scale 1-5. The data was calculated manually with the range of score from 33 to 165. The findings showed that 6 students have high anxiety and 19 students have moderate anxiety. It means that 76% of VIII grade students of State Junior High School 4 Gunung Talang had moderate anxiety in speaking. The students who had moderate anxiety were the students who got score of questionnaire in interval 78-121 and the interval score of high anxiety is 122-165. After analyzing students’ questionnaire, it was found that the total of communication apprehension was 4 (16%), test anxiety was 7(28%), and fear negative evaluation was 14(56%) students. It is concluded that there were 19 or 76% of students who had moderate anxious in speaking in front of the class. The fear of negative evaluation was dominant factor. The most of causes of the students’ anxiety in asking and giving opinion were the students’ fear to be laugh by their friend and be anxious when perform in front of the class without preparation. Thus, the researcher suggest to the teachers to use variety technique in learning process to motivate the students to speak English in front of other people without feeling anxious.
