Abstract
ABSTRACT Setia Wati Kurnia, 2018 . The Effect of Mind Mapping Technique Towards Students’ Writing Ability At X Grade SMA PGRI 4 Padang The problems of this research are based on phenomenon that most of students had low ability in producing the text in written form. Students’ ability to produce their mind in to the written form was still weak, as a result they got difficulties in expressing and organizing their idea. They though that writing is difficult. They did not know how to start their writing. then, they were also still confused to develop their vocabularies, to organize their ideas by considering the five components of writing skill so that the writing become a better writing. therefore, mind mapping techniques are proposed to promote students writing skill. The purpose of this research is to determine whether there is significant effect on students’ writing ability at class X of SMA PGRI 4 Padang with using mind mapping technique. This research was true experimental research.The population of this research was all of the students at class X of SMA PGRI 4 Padang that consist of 53 students who were divided into two classes. Then the researcher took class X.1 and X.2 as the sample that was chosen through simple random sampling. Where class X.1 as experiment class consist of 27 students and class X.2 as control class consist of 26 students. In collecting the data, researcher used written test. The test was given to both classes with the same topic. Then, pos-test was given after applying the treatment for six meeting to determine the differences of using mind mapping. The data was analyzed by using statistical procedures. Result of the research Showed that the mean score of the students’ writing ability in experiment class (74,48) was higher then the mean score of students, writing ability in control class (69,88). While, t-obtained (4,263) was also bigger then t- table (2.000) moreover, each components of writing both of classes are different. It can be seen from the comparison of students’ mean score of post-test. Statistically, it is showed that teaching writing by using mind mapping gives significant difference on students’ writing ability. It can be concluded that mind mapping improves the student writing ability especially in considering five components of writing. So it is recommended for English teacher and should consider the use of mind mapping as an alternative in teaching writing.
