Abstract

The background of this research was some of the students at class IX of State Junior High School 2 Payakumbuh were shy and not motivated in speaking performance but the others were not. This research aimed to describe students’ motivation in speaking performance at class IX of State Junior High School 2 Payakumbuh and to find out the mostly factor influencing students’ motivation in speaking performance at class IX of State Junior High School 2 Payakumbuh. The method of this research was descriptive research type. The population of this research was 260 students at class IX. The random sampling technique was used to choose the sample. The sample of this research was 31 respondents. The instrument of this research was questionnaire which consisted of 24 items. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The result showed that the students’ motivation in speaking performance was influenced by some factors; they were classroom condition, peers, teachers and parents. The highest mean of those factors was parental factor. The second highest mean was teachers’ attitude and the last factor was classroom feature and environmental factors. Based on the findings above, it can be concluded that the students’ motivation in speaking performance was influenced by some factors; classroom condition, peers, teachers and parents. The mostly factor influencing students’ motivation in speaking performance at class IX State Junior High School 2 Payakumbuh is parental factors.
