Abstract
This study examined the types and contextual meanings of English expressions used by members of online gaming communities at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, Lubuk Lintah, during Mobile Legends gameplay. The study focused on two research questions concerning the types of English expressions used by the participants and the contextual meanings conveyed through those expressions. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed. The participants consisted of ten undergraduate students of the English Education Department who were members of two Mobile Legends communities. The participants were involved in two observation sessions, with five participants in each gameplay video. The data were obtained through two observation sessions conducted at different times and documented in two gameplay videos, followed by semi-structured interviews. The observations resulted in 121 initial occurrences of English expressions, consisting of 74 occurrences from the first video and 47 occurrences from the second video. Following the data condensation process, 12 expressions with relevant and identifiable communicative contexts were selected for further analysis. The first research question was analyzed using Brown's (2007) concept of language functions, which was operationalized in this study into five communicative function categories, while the second research question was examined using Leech's contextual meaning framework. The findings showed that command expressions were the most dominant type, occurring in 10 of the 12 selected expressions, or 83.33% of the data. The remaining expressions consisted of giving information and expressing feeling. The analysis of contextual meaning further indicated that the interpretation of the expressions was primarily shaped by situational context, particularly the conditions and activities occurring during gameplay. Social, linguistic, and cultural contexts also contributed to the interpretation of the expressions. The findings demonstrate that English expressions used in Mobile Legends communication function mainly to coordinate actions, direct teammates, provide strategic information, and respond to particular gaming situations. Thus, their meanings are better understood by considering the context of use rather than their literal meanings alone.
