Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine whether the use of TikTok as a learning medium has a significant effect on the speaking skills of the seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Pulau Punjung. This research was conducted because students still experienced difficulties in speaking English, particularly in pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary, while the learning process was still dominated by conventional teaching methods with limited use of digital learning media. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design. The population of this research consisted of all seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Pulau Punjung. The sample was selected through purposive sampling, involving 32 students in the experimental class and 32 students in the control class. The experimental class was taught using TikTok as a learning medium, whereas the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. The instrument used in this research was a speaking test administered in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and the Mann–Whitney U test using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. The findings showed that the mean post-test score of the experimental class was 59.53, while the control class obtained a mean score of 42.50. The Shapiro–Wilk test showed that the data in both the experimental class (Sig. = 0.008) and the control class (Sig. = 0.028) were not normally distributed. Therefore, the Mann–Whitney U test was used to test the hypothesis. The results showed a Mann–Whitney U value of 420.000, with a Z value of -1.263 and an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.206, which was higher than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was not rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was not accepted. In conclusion, the use of TikTok as a learning medium did not result in a statistically significant difference in the speaking skills of the seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Pulau Punjung.
