Abstract

This research aimed to see the significant effect of using the Quizizz application on the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Pariaman, particularly in identifying the main idea, vocabulary, inference, detailed information, and reference in descriptive texts. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, namely the Pretest Posttest Control Group Design. The population of this research was all eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Pariaman, consisting of four classes with a total of 94 students, and the sample consisted of two classes selected through cluster sampling technique, namely class VIII.1 as the experimental class and class VIII.2 as the control class, with 22 students in each class. The experimental class was taught using the Quizizz application, while the control class was taught using a conventional teaching method. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test consisting of 20 multiple-choice items, administered as a pre test and a post-test. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Mann-Whitney U Test. The results of the normality test indicated that the post-test data were not normally distributed. Therefore, the Mann-Whitney U Test was used to test the research hypothesis. The results showed that the post-test mean score of the experimental class (49.55) was higher than that of the control class (41.59), with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀ ) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁ ) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using the Quizizz application on the reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Pariaman, particularly in improving their inference skills, although its effect on understanding reference remained limited.
