Abstract

The increasing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education has raised concerns about academic integrity and the lack of specific institutional regulations governing its use. This condition may lead to different interpretations of the boundaries and consequences of GenAI use among students. This study aims to explore how students interpret regulations and academic sanctions related to GenAI use in written academic assignments based on the perspective of Deterrence Theory. A qualitative exploratory approach was employed involving ten students from the Faculty of Science and Technology at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and supporting document review, then analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis with a deductive approach based on certainty, severity, and celerity. The findings show that students primarily rely on lecturer- or course-level regulations because no specific institutional regulation governing GenAI use was identified. Certainty tends to be weak because students have limited confidence that GenAI use will consistently be detected and followed by sanctions. Severity is considered by students but does not always lead them to stop using GenAI. Meanwhile, celerity has not been strongly formed due to limited experience with sanction enforcement. Overall, the deterrence mechanism in GenAI use has not yet been established strongly and uniformly, as students’ interpretations are closely related to their experiences with the application of regulations and sanctions.
