Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using the Team Games Tournament (TGT) technique in teaching monologue ability to Eighth-grade students at SMPN 5 Padang. A quantitative pre-experimental design (one-group pre-test post-test design) was used in this study. The sample consisted of 25 students in one experimental class. The research instrument was a speaking test conducted before the treatment (pre-test) and after the treatment (post-test). The students' speaking performances were analyzed using the assessment rubric by Hughes (2003), covering pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS. The results showed a significant difference in student score distribution. In the pre-test, the majority of students (11 students) were in the 43–52 score range (Poor). After the treatment, the post-test results showed that the majority of students (16 students) achieved the 63–72 score range (Good). The conclusion is that the Team Games Tournament (TGT) technique is effective in teaching monologue ability to the Eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Padang.
