Abstract

Speaking is an essential language skill for effective communication. Therefore, speaking materials in English textbooks need to be evaluated to ensure their quality. This study aims to analyze the speaking materials in the English textbook Work in Progress for tenth-grade senior high school students used in the Merdeka Curriculum based on Dat Bao’s (2014) framework, which includes linguistic support, content-based and affective support, skill support, and diversity and flexibility. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using content analysis. The data were taken from speaking materials in four chapters of the textbook and analyzed using a checklist adapted from Bao’s theory and the Merdeka Curriculum content standards. The findings show that the speaking materials in Work in Progress generally meet the criteria of good speaking materials. The textbook provides adequate linguistic input, meaningful and contextual topics, and various speaking activities that support the development of students’ speaking skills. However, opportunities for debate and argumentative speaking activities were still limited. In conclusion, the textbook Work in Progress is appropriate for teaching speaking skills to tenth-grade students under the Merdeka Curriculum, although some improvements are still required.
