Abstract

The purpose of this research is improvement of students' speaking skills through the Effect of Pairwork technique in the eighth grade of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Modern Arafah Sungai Penuh. This research used a quantitative pre-experimental design. Thirty-six eighth grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Modern Arafah Sungai Penuh became the subjects of this research. An interview test was given before the treatment to see their pre-test scores. The experimental class was treated using the pairwork technique for four meetings. At the end of the treatment, students were given a post-test. both tests was analyzed using Hughes’ (2003) assessment rubric, including accent, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20, the results showed that the post-test score (59.70) was higher than the pre-test (42.26), indicating that the pairwork technique had a significant effect on students' speaking skills. The 2-tailed significance value of the paired test was 0.000 <0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It can be concluded that the pairwork technique in teaching speaking can help students to improve their speaking skills.
