Abstract

This research investigates the language choices used by an English teacher at SMPN 41 Padang and explores the reasons behind these choices as well as their benefits in the teaching and learning process. The study focuses on the use of three languages: English, Indonesian language, and Minang language during English instruction in Grade VII. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the teacher frequently switches between English, Indonesian language, and Minang language based on the context, the complexity of the material, and students’ linguistic abilities. English is used for greetings, vocabulary exposure, and classroom routines; Indonesian language is used to explain difficult concepts and ensure comprehension; while Minang language is used in informal interactions to build emotional closeness and maintain classroom engagement. The study identifies four main reasons for language choice: topic relevance, affective function, lexical constraints, and linguistic constraints. The results show that language switching supports students' understanding, creates a comfortable learning environment, and gradually familiarizes students with English. Therefore, language choice in multilingual classrooms like SMPN 41 Padang serves not only as a pedagogical strategy but also as a reflection of teachers’ sensitivity to students’ cultural and linguistic needs.
