Abstract

This research explores the strategies used by an English teacher in teaching speaking to tenth-grade students at SMAN 16 Padang. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observation, teacher interviews, and document analysis. The findings show that the teacher applied strategies such as role play, group discussion, problem-solving tasks, picture-based activities, and direct feedback to enhance students’ speaking ability. These strategies helped students become more confident, active, and motivated in speaking English, although challenges such as fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, and time constraints were still encountered. To overcome these issues, the teacher created a supportive environment, encouraged pair and group practice, provided vocabulary lists, and gave constructive feedback. The study concludes that the teacher’s strategies play an essential role in improving students’ speaking skills and suggests the importance of providing varied interactive opportunities to practice speaking both in and outside the classroom.
