Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of digital comics in enhancing students' English reading skills. Using a quantitative technique with a pre-test and post-test design, the study enrolled 31 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 2 Gunung Talang. The students were given digital comics to read independently at home over time. The results revealed a substantial improvement in reading scores, with an average increase from 62.26 in the pretest to 76.94 in the posttest. Statistical analysis verified that the difference was substantial, demonstrating that using digital comics improves reading comprehension. Digital comics blend compelling graphics and textual narratives, helping students learn and enjoy English reading materials more effectively. Their visual features help contextualize new terminology and maintain learners' attention, resulting in enhanced understanding. According to this study, digital comics can be a useful tool for increasing junior high school pupils' enthusiasm for reading and developing their reading abilities. Furthermore, their accessibility and engaging nature make them an effective option for fostering independent study outside the classroom. Using digital media in language learning is recommended to increase student engagement and reading outcomes.
