Abstract
This study aims to analyze the suitability of the "Bupena Merdeka English" textbook for eighth-grade students in junior high schools in Indonesia, assessing its alignment with the content standards established by Alan Cunningsworth. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, this research focuses on the English textbook authored by Nur Zaida and published by Erlangga. The analysis is structured around three primary criteria: variety, cultural representation, and currency. The findings reveal that while the textbook demonstrates strengths in content variety and currency, it falls short in adequately representing local cultural elements and traditions. The analysis indicates that the textbook effectively engages students with relevant topics and contemporary issues, fostering a connection to their daily lives. However, the lack of depth in cultural representation limits students' understanding of their own heritage and the diversity of global cultures. Overall, the study concludes that the "Bupena Merdeka English" textbook is suitable for use in the classroom, achieving a satisfactory rating in terms of content quality. Based on the research findings regarding the suitability of the “Bupena Merdeka English” textbook for eighth grade students, the researcher advises English teachers to integrate local cultural content, encourage critical thinking through discussions and group projects, and use diverse teaching strategies to meet various learning styles. In addition, it is important to connect lessons to students' real-life situations, provide regular feedback and assessment, and encourage the use of English in authentic contexts. Teachers are also encouraged to take part in professional development to stay updated with the latest methodologies and collect feedback from students to improve the learning experience. By implementing these suggestions, teachers can hopefully create a more engaging and culturally relevant learning environment.
