Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the teaching process of English vocabulary, specifically to identify the techniques used by teachers in teaching vocabulary to eighth-grade students at MTsN 3 Pesisir Selatan and to determine the most dominant difficulty students face in learning vocabulary. This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research. The population consists of all eighth-grade students and their English teacher at MTsN 3 Pesisir Selatan. Using simple random sampling, 40 students out of 132 were selected as the research sample. The findings reveal three main techniques used by teachers: (1) Presentation techniques (explanation and translation) to introduce word forms and meanings, (2) Practice techniques (repetition) to reinforce vocabulary knowledge, and (3) Training techniques (dictionary use) to enhance students' independent learning. These techniques help improve students' vocabulary mastery and enable teachers to deliver material more effectively. However, students face several challenges in learning vocabulary, particularly in pronunciation (69.6%), spelling (66.3%), grammar (64.5%), and meaning (57.5%). The most dominant difficulty is pronunciation, as many students struggle to articulate new words clearly and frequently make errors. They also experience confusion with words that have similar sounds, further complicating their pronunciation skills. In this study, the teacher applied several techniques but students still had difficulties in learning English therefore the teacher can find other techniques to provide solutions to students' problems.
