Abstract

This study aims to analyze the choice of language codes used by teachers in English class interactions at SMPN 1 Batang Anai. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to identify the forms of code-switching and code-mixing that occur in teacher and student interactions, as well as the social factors that influence the code selection. The results show that teachers use various types of code-switching (tag switching, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching) and code-mixing (inner code mixing, outer code mixing, hybrid code mixing) in the teaching process. The main factors that influence the choice of code are the students' level of understanding, the students' social background, and the learning objectives that the teacher wants to achieve. The use of a mixture of Indonesian, English, and Minang in the classroom aims to improve student understanding, build emotional closeness, and create a more interactive and effective learning atmosphere.This research contributes to the world of education, especially in understanding the dynamics of interaction in multilingual classrooms and its implications for the effectiveness of English language learning in Indonesia.
