Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether the use of Webtoon as a digital learning media had a significant effect on the reading comprehension of ninth- grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Danau Kembar. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design involving an experimental class and a control class. The sample consisted of 41 students, with 21 students from class IX A as the experimental class and 20 students from class IX B as the control class. The experimental class was taught using Webtoon as a digital learning media to support the teaching of narrative texts, while the control class was taught using conventional text-based media. The instrument used in this study was a multiple-choice reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, followed by an independent samples t-test. The results showed that the mean post-test score of the experimental class was 83.81 with a standard deviation of 9.735, while the control class obtained a mean score of 76.50 with a standard deviation of 11.596. The homogeneity test showed a significance value of 0.362, which was greater than 0.05, indicating that the variances of the two classes were homogeneous. The independent samples t-test showed a calculated t-value of 2,190 with 39 degrees of freedom (df) and a significance value of 0.035, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. It can be concluded that the use of Webtoon as a digital learning media had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Danau Kembar. The higher mean score obtained by the experimental class also indicated that the use of Webtoon had a positive effect on students’ reading comprehension.
