Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTsN 2 Kota Pariaman and to identify the speaking component with the lowest performance. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach. The participants were 35 eighth-grade students selected from seven classes. The data were collected through an individual speaking test in the form of a question-and-answer activity. The students’ speaking performances were assessed based on six components proposed by Brown (2004), namely grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, pronunciation, and task. The assessment was conducted by two raters, namely the English teacher and the researcher. The scores from both raters were averaged and analyzed using frequency, percentage, and mean scores. The findings showed that the overall mean score of the students’ speaking performance was 2.13 out of 5, which was classified as Poor based on the five-point scoring classification used in this research. Pronunciation obtained the highest mean score of 2.23, followed by vocabulary and comprehension, both with 2.17, fluency with 2.13, task with 2.09, and grammar with the lowest mean score of 2.01. Therefore, grammar was identified as the lowest-performing component of the students’ speaking skills
