Abstract

Digital financial applications such as DANA have become an integral part of everyday life in Indonesia; however, user awareness and motivation to protect digital security remain critical concerns. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the variables of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the digital security motivation of DANA application users in Padang City. The variables examined include perceived severity, perceived vulnerability, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and response cost as independent variables, while protection motivation serves as the dependent variable. This research employed a quantitative approach using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as the analytical method. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 124 respondents using a purposive sampling technique, with the criteria that respondents were DANA application users aged 17 years and above residing in Padang City. During the measurement model evaluation, the perceived vulnerability variable was found to be invalid and was therefore excluded from further analysis because its indicators failed to meet the minimum outer loading threshold of 0.70 and produced an Average Variance Extracted (AVE) value of only 0.358, which is below the required minimum of 0.50. The findings indicate that, among the PMT constructs examined, self-efficacy plays the most critical role in shaping the digital security motivation of DANA users in Padang City. Therefore, strengthening users’ confidence and competence in performing protective actions is recommended as the primary strategy for improving digital security behavior among financial application users.
