Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between parental parenting and fear of intimacy in early adulthood in Padang City. Fear of intimacy is an individual's tendency to avoid emotional closeness due to fears of rejection, negative judgment, or painful emotional experiences. The experience of parenting in the family is one of the factors that contribute to the formation of individual emotional relationship patterns in early adulthood. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The research subjects amounted to 349 early adults in Padang City which were obtained through sampling techniques with simple random sampling. Data were collected using a parenting scale consisting of authoritarian, democratic, and permissive types, as well as a fear of intimacy scale. Data analysis was carried out using a correlation test. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the three types of parenting were in the medium category, with the percentage of authoritarian parenting at 42%, democratic 70.1%, and permissive 42.8%. Meanwhile, the level of fear of intimacy was in the high category of 67,8% and the medium category of 32,2%, and no respondents were found in the low category. The results of the correlation test showed that authoritarian (r = 0.246), democratic (r = 0.255), and permissive (r = 0.256) parenting had a positive and significant relationship with fear of intimacy. Based on the results of the analysis, the direction of the relationship found was positive, namely the higher the parenting s, the higher the fear of intimacy. Based on these results, it can be concluded that parental parenting has a relationship with fear of intimacy in early adulthood in Padang City.
