Abstract

This study aims to determine how students in the English Education Study Program use ChatGPT as a tool for learning English. This study uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. The location of this study is at Imam Bonjol State Islamic University Padang. In this study, the author uses purposive sampling techniques with informants from the English Education Study Program at Imam Bonjol State Islamic University Padang. The research instrument in this study was the researcher himself, equipped with recording devices and cameras for interviews as part of the data collection process, which included warming up, probing, and closing. The data analysis technique used in this study was the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings of this study indicate that ChatGPT is used for language translation, thesis writing, searching for theoretical sources, finding information, improving understanding, checking grammatical accuracy, and helping to generate ideas. ChatGPT also has both positive and negative impacts. Positive impacts of using ChatGPT include simplifying tasks, saving time, providing understanding, encouraging adaptation to technology, easy access, and providing instant answers. Negative impacts of using ChatGPT include reducing creativity and critical thinking skills, hindering independent learning, fostering dependence on external assistance, encouraging plagiarism, limited features, inaccurate information, and overly lengthy explanations. Therefore, researchers recommend the use of ChatGPT as a means of deepening understanding for students of the English Education Study Program at State Islamic University Imam Bonjol Padang, as well as for other students.
