Abstract

The goal of this research was to determine whether Matchmaking game as ice breaking has a significant effect on students' speaking skills, especially in describing things in class VII students of MTsN 3 Lima Puluh Kota.This study used a quasi-experiment with posttest only design. The sample in this study amounted to 64 students, VII.9 as the experimental class and VII.10 as the control class. The treatment was teaching by using matchmaking game which was conducted for five meetings. At the sixth meeting, students were given a Post-Test. Both tests were analyzed using an assessment rubric (Hughes, 2003:132) which included pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and understanding. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25, the results showed that the significant value of the 2-tailed independent sample test was 0.000 <0.05. This explains that there is a significant difference in the Post-Test value of the experimental class (74.22) which is higher than the Post-Test of the control class (61.03). It can be concluded that matchmaking game as ice breaking has effective on students' speaking skills in describing things in class VII students of MTsN 3 Lima Puluh Kota.
