Abstract
Students lack of speaking skills as evidenced in many Junior High School was mainly due to their inappropriate affective skills, as indicated in Islamic Junior High School 2 Kota Pariaman. Therefore, the shift to ELT technique such as Story Completion was needed to be learning English. The aim of this research is to determine whether or not the story completion technique give significant effects toward student speaking skills at grade VIII on MTSN 2 Kota Pariaman. This end, the problem of the research was formulated as “Does story completion technique give significant effect to student speaking skill at grade VIII at Islamic Junior High School 2 Kota Pariaman?” This experimental study involved 216 students grade VIII. The subjects were (32 students) were determined to be the experimental group and (24 students) as control group. In the early stage of the experiment the students were directed to retell the story one after another. Then, they were guided to complete the story in groups. After several meetings, they were tested (post-test). The result of test was analyzed by using SPSS program. The result of this research indicates than the mean score of experimental class (63.56) was higher than control class (42.38). Furthermore, the T_(calculate ) (2.10665) was greater than the T_table (1.67356). This shown that the previous alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Meaning that, students who are taught by story completion technique got better speaking skills than choose who are not. It can be concluded that from the research the story completion techniques give significant effects toward student speaking skills especially in the indicator of grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary at grade VIII of Islamic Junior High School 2 Kota Pariaman. Since story completion technique is approved to raise students speaking skills at MTSN 2 Kota Pariaman so, English teacher should apply this technique by modifying this technique so that it can provide a higher achievement in the fluency and pronunciation aspects of students' speaking skills.
