Abstract
This research aims to determine the effectiveness of riddle technique to teach students' vocabulary in class VII A of SMP Negeri 38 Padang. This research used a pre-experiment. The population of this research was all students of class VII at SMP Negeri 38 Padang. The total population was 210. The sample of this research was class VII A consisting of 30 students. The sampling technique in this research was Cluster sampling. The instrument of this research was a vocabulary test. The pre test was given to determine the basic vocabulary skills of students' vocabulary and the post test was given to determine the increase in students' vocabulary after being given treatment and this research used a riddle game. The test consisted of 25 questions, then the test was calculated and analyzed using SPSS 26. After the data was analyzed, it was found that students' vocabulary increased through the riddle game in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 38 Padang. There is a significant difference between the results of the pre-test and post-test, namely the post-test is higher than the pre-test, where the average value of the pre-test is 58.80 and the post-test is 82.26 where the t-count value (37.384) is higher than the t-table value (2.045) or 37.384>2.045. On the other hand, almost all students' vocabulary increased after the treatment. It can be concluded that there is a significant effectively of the use of the riddle technique on the vocabulary of class VII A students at SMP Negeri 38 Padang Keywords: Riddle Technique, Vocabulary
