Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) Strategy towards students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text at eighth grade of SMP It Madinah Al-Fatih Nan Sabaris. The research design uses pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this research is all of class VIII students at SMP IT Madinah Al-Fatih Nan Sabaris totaling 57 students and the selected sample of this research is class VIII A students totaling 25 students. To collect the data, researchers used pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The pre-test is given at the first meeting, this test is given to see the students' initial abilities. The treatment was teaching by using Read, Cover, Remember, Retell Strategy which is conduct for four meetings. At the end of the treatment, students were given the Post-Test. The researcher shows that Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) Strategy is effective for reading comprehension, this is proven by the Mean score during the pre-test was 54.56 and post-test was 73.76, it means there was a difference before and after treatment. The pre-test standard deviation of 7.2 was greater than the post-test standard deviation of 5.7. It showed that the treatment was well implemented. After the researcher calculated the mean score and standar deviation the researcher used the t-test formula that suggested by Gay (2012) The result of the research was analyzed by t-test formula and the researcher got tcalculated was 14,930. After that, the researcher compared to t-table was 2.064 with degree of freedom 25-1=24. After analyzing the data, the researcher got tcount higher than t-table (14,930>2,064). So, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It means there was a significant effect of teaching reading by using Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) strategy at the eighth grade students of SMP IT Madinah Al-Fatih Nan Sabaris Keywords : Read, Cover, Remember, Retell, (RCRR) Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text
