Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Retelling technique to students’ speaking skill in recounting past experience at Islamic Senior High School 2 Kerinci. A quantitative pre-experimental type was used in this study. Twenty-eight of eleven grade students of Islamic Senior High School 2 Kerinci where the subject of this study. Performance test was given prior to the treatment to describe their Pre-test score. The treatment was teaching by using Retelling technique which was conducted for four meetings. At the end of the treatment, students were given the Post-Test. Both tests were analyzed by using scoring rubrics (Brown, 2004:172) to include Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. The scores constituted 1-5 point and the total points were multiplied by 4. The result showed that the Post-test score (73.14) was higher than the Pre-test (53.28), suggesting that Retelling technique had significant effects to Students’ speaking skills (at the level of 0.001, significant of 0.05). Further analysis of the data maintained that Grammar and Vocabulary were the major indicators to show the strengths of Retelling technique particularly when dealing with telling past experience. It can be concluded that Retelling technique helps students to improve their speaking skills. Since there was a limited time and many students in the classroom as experienced during the study, students’ competencies may even be better improved provided that these limitations were eliminated. Therefore, for future studies, it is suggested that the number of treatments should be added, and students should be reduced into smaller number such as 20 to 25 students.
