Abstract

The research aimed to analyze students’ leaning styles in learning English of the 7th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pariaman. There were two formulations of problem in the research such as 1) What are the types of learning styles in learning English used by 7th grade at SMP N1 Pariaman, and 2) How are the learning styles in learning English viewed based on gender difference on 7th grade at SMP N1 Pariaman?. The research was in mixed method, it collect, analyze, and interpret the phenomenon of learning style based on gender differences. In collecting the data, the researcher used a questionnaire sheet, observation and interview. The result of this research showed that each student was different based on their own learning styles. They were classified into four categories of learning styles, such as : visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning style. The results showed that, 42% for visual students, 36% audiotory, 15% kinesthetic, and 7% for audio visual students. In addition, the results of observation showed that male students preferred audiotory learning style, meanwhile female students preferred visual learning style. The research helped the students to know and realize their own learning style, provided contribution to the teacher to plan learning strategies and activities in learning English that will suit to each learning style based on gender perspective and to be a new reference and updates the existing study.
