Abstract
An Analysis of Task Instructions in an English Textbook Based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy” This study is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to analyze the cognitive dimensions of task instructions used in the English textbook and to know the most dominant cognitive dimensions of Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. This study focuses on analyzing the task instructions on the activity features in each chapter of the English textbook entitled “Passport to the World 2: Fun and Easy English for SMP Class VIII” published by Tiga Serangkai. The data was analyzed through data analysis table to categorize task instructions based on cognitive dimensions. The results showed that there were 86 task instructions in the textbook. The most dominating cognitive level among the 86 task instructions on the activity features in the textbook are level C1 (remembering) and level C3 (applying) which both include 25 activities, while C2 (understanding) only includes 7 activities, C4 (analyzing) includes 6 activities, C5 (evaluating) includes 4 activities, and C6 (creating) includes 19 activities. Based on the data analysis, the activities in the English textbook emphasize low thinking skills (LOTS) which include 57 task instructions. Meanwhile, higher order thinking has only a few task instructions in this textbook which includes only 29 task instructions. Therefore, this book is not suitable to be used to improve students' higher order thinking skills.
