Abstract
An Analysis of EFL Classroom Interaction In Teaching English (Study at 4th Grade Students of Muhammadiyah Islamic Elementary School Tamiang Ujung Gading) This study aims to identify the types of classroom interactions and describe how teachers and students interact in teaching English study at the 4th grade Muhammadiyah Islamic Elementary School Tamiang Ujung Gading. The data from this study were obtained from observations. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, in this research data was collected in the English teaching and learning process with English teachers and students as the object of research. Data obtained through observation in four meetings (video recordings). After the data was obtained, then the data were analyzed using the Flander's Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) system which consisted of seven categories when the teacher was talking (teacher talk) and two categories when students spoke (student talk) and one category was silent or confused. This study found that the category of teacher talk, are namely asking questions and giving directions dominates the interactions that occur in the classroom. As for the students' talk category, the most dominant type used is student talk response. Furthermore, the teacher and students interact in the classroom, in the pre teaching is dominated by the category of asking questions and giving directions, then in the while teaching is dominated by the category of asking questions, student responses and giving directions and the post teaching is dominated by the category of student responses. This study shows that classroom interaction in teaching English at the school is teacher-centered. This research is suggested to teachers to support students in interaction in the classroom during the teaching and learning process in the classroom.
