Abstract

Writing is one of skills that should be learned in senior high school. Writing skill in State Senior High School 9 Padang is taught by using Scientific Approach. The purpose of this research was to know and find out the students’ components of writing skill that have been mastered. Those are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic and students’ generic structure of recount and narrative texts mostly mastered. Recount and narrative texts are two of genre which should be mastered by the students at Class X Social Science of State Senior High School 9 Padang. This research was descriptive research. There were 179 students at class X Social Science of State Senior High School 9 Padang. To get the data, researcher used cluster random sampling technique. Instrument of this research was written test of recount and narrative texts. The result was analyzed with assessment criterion by Jacob (1981 : 90). Based on the result of the test found that, the mean score of students based on component of writing was 60.17. The score indicate that most students cannot reach the Minimum Achievement Criteria (MAC) specified by school that is 75. For each component, content was 20.95, organization was 12.47, then vocabulary was 12.06, language use was 12.11, and mechanic was 2.59. For each component, students’ score were in fair. Thus, it was concluded that the students’ writing skill at Class X Social Science of State Senior High School 9 Padang still require to be improved. Suggested to English teacher to improve the students’ writing skill, and also assist them to write down ideas on writing recount and narrative texts.
