Abstract

Writing is one of the skills should be learned at Junior High School. Teaching writing at Junior High School 14 Padang taught by using Genre Based Approach. Descriptive and recount text are types of genres which should be mastered by the students of Junior High School 14 Padang on writing skill. The research are to analyze the students’ skill Junior High School 14, students’ mastery on writ ing components of descriptive and recount texts, the analysis also is focused on student’s mastery on generic structure of descriptive and recount texts and this research also is focused to find out factor dominantly caused the students have lack of mastery in writing descriptive and recount texts. This is a descriptive research types. There are 225 students of class VIII Junior High School 14 Padang in Academic year 2017/2018 as respondent of the research. The research has taken 12% of 225 students or 4 students for each class as respondent of the research used simple random sampling technique. There are 30 students as respondent. Instrument of this research are written test form paragraph and questionnaires. Results of the test is analyzed with assessment criterion tell by Jacob and questionnaire is analyzed with the result percentage. Based on the result of the test found that students writing skills is fair. The students is not mastered recount text between that the mean score of students based on components writing is 57.36 for descriptive and 57.4 for recount. The score is indicated that most students cannot yet reach minimum Achievement Criteria (MAC) specified by school that is 78. The student is not mastered language use on components writing that mean score, that for content, descriptive is 19.1, and recount is 19, for organization, descriptive is 12.96, and recount is 12.93, for vocabulary, descriptive is 11.74, and recount is 11.9, for the language use, descriptive is 11, and recount is 11.06, for mechanics, descriptive is 2.46, and recount is 2.7. While the student is not mastered identification in writing descriptive text that the mean score of students based on generic of structures of descriptive text is 11.6 for identification, and 14.1 for description. Whereas the student also is not mastered series of events in writing recount that the mean score of students based on generic of structures of recount text is 2.96 for the orientation, 1.96 for the series of event, and 2.6 for the reorientation. Based on the result of student writing form paragraph analysis and supported with test arrangement sentences, hence difficulty of students are in find the equal vocabulary and language use mastery in English. From the writing can be concluded that the component of writing and generic structure on descriptive and recount texts that haven’t mastered. Based on the result of questionnaire lack of knowledge is the factor dominantly caused the students have lack of mastery in writing descriptive and recount texts. It be concluded that the students writing skill at class VIII Junior High School 14 Padang still require to be improved. Suggested to English teacher to improve the student writing skill, and also assist them to write down ideas on writing descriptive and recount texts.
