Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine whether the Three-Step Interview technique give significant effect or not to students’ speaking skills in narrating recount text at the Eighth-Grade Students of SMPN 38 Padang. A quantitative quasi-experimental type was used in this research. There were 58 students as sample for this research, VIII.E as an experimental class and VIII.F as a control class. The treatment was teaching by using Three-Step Interview technique which was conducted for five meetings. At the sixth meetings, students were given the Post-Test. Both tests were analyzed by using scoring rubrics (Hughes, 2003: 132) including Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 20, the result showed that the significant 2-tailed value of the independent sample test is 0.000 <0.05. It explains that there is a significant difference in score for the Post-Test of experimental class (75.69) was higher than Post-Test of control class (66.86). It can be concluded that Three-Step Interview technique give significant effect to students’ speaking skill in narrating recount text at the Eighth-Grade Students of SMPN 38 Padang.
