Abstract

ABSTRACT SETRI YENTI (2018):The Effect of Semantic Mapping Strategy Towards Students’ Writing Skill in Descriptive Text at State Senior High School 2 Kota Pariaman The problem this research such as the students got difficult to write in English , lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary.The students could not know how to organize their idea, they did not understand punctuation and also they could not write right spelling. Therefore, the main problem of this research was to know whether Semantic Mapping Strategy gave significant effect on students’ writing skill. This research was conducted by pre-experimental design. The population of this research were all of clases X students’ of State Senior High School 2 Kota Pariaman that consisted of 127. Then by using Cluster Sampling the researcher took class X as the sample that consist of 31 students’. In collecting the data, researcher used written test in writing. Before giving post-test, researcher gave pre-test to experimental class. Pre-test was given after doing treatments to know the effect of Semantic Mapping strategy toward students’ writing skill at State Senior High School 2 Kota Pariaman. The result of this research showed that Students’ writing skill by used Semantic Mapping Strategy in descriptive text improve. The result find of mean score of post-test (82.35) was higher than pre-test (50.30). The calculation of the result of the test, it was indicated that tcalculate was 17.56 and ttable was 2.75 with p = 0,05 and degree of freedom 30. So, it meant that tcalculate was higher than ttable (17.56>2.75) and the hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded Semantic Mapping strategy can be improve students’ writing skill. So, the English teacher should consider that Semantic Mapping is effective strategy in teaching writing to improve students’ writing skill.
