Abstract

Aims to identify and analyze the predominant types of speaking materials and speaking activities in the textbook based on Cunningsworth's (1995) evaluation theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a document analysis design, data were collected from the "English for Nusantara" textbook (based on the Kurikulum Merdeka) and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The results indicate that there are a total of 51 speaking materials, where dialogues and practice of language items are the most frequently presented types, with 21 occurrences each. Meanwhile, out of a total of 52 identified speaking activities, communication activities dominate with 18 occurrences. In conclusion, this textbook provides sufficient opportunities for students to practice their speaking skills through a good combination of structured language accuracy building and the encouragement of meaningful collaborative communication among students, which aligns with the objectives of Kurikulum Merdeka.
