Abstract

Infectious diseases and nutritional disorders are among the most common health problems affecting children and require early identification to prevent more serious complications. However, limited health literacy among parents and the need for an initial diagnosis before seeking medical treatment often hinder early detection. This study aims to develop a web-based expert system for diagnosing infectious diseases and nutritional disorders in children using the Forward Chaining and Certainty Factor methods. Forward Chaining was applied to infer possible diseases based on the symptoms selected by users, while the Certainty Factor method was used to calculate the confidence level of each diagnosis. The system was developed using PHP Native and MySQL as the database management system. Knowledge acquisition was conducted through interviews with a pediatric specialist, resulting in 15 symptoms, 3 disease hypotheses, and diagnostic rules incorporated into the knowledge base. System functionality was evaluated using Black Box Testing, while diagnostic validity was assessed by comparing the system's results with the diagnoses provided by the expert using ten test cases. The Black Box Testing results indicated that all system functions operated as expected. Furthermore, the validation process showed that the system achieved 100% diagnostic agreement with the expert's diagnoses for all test cases. The developed expert system is expected to assist parents in performing an initial screening of infectious diseases and nutritional disorders in children by providing diagnostic results, confidence values, and recommendations for further medical consultation. Although the system demonstrates satisfactory performance, it is intended only as a decision-support tool and does not replace professional medical diagnosis by healthcare practitioners.
