Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to describe students' ability to write argumentative essays by using Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the fourth semester of English Tadris Class A, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. This study uses a descriptive method to gain understanding and explanation of the subject matter. This study focuses on fourth semester students of English Tadris Class A, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang. To collect data, this study uses document analysis as a research instrument. Data were collected through students' argumentative essay answer sheets written with the help of Gemini AI. The essays were assessed by two assessors using Jacobs et al.'s (1981) writing assessment rubric, which covers five aspects: developing ideas/content, organizing grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Inter-rater reliability was applied to ensure the validity of the assessment. The results showed that students' overall ability to write argumentative essays using Gemini AI was categorized as good to very good. The overall average score was 85.03. Most students scored above 80, with the highest score being 92 and the lowest being 68.5. The strongest aspects achieved by students were in developing ideas and organizing, while the lowest performance was found in grammar and mechanics, where some students still made errors in tense consistency, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. In this finding, Gemini AI made a positive contribution to students' argumentative essay writing skills. Gemini AI helped them in developing ideas, structuring essays, and improving vocabulary use. However, students still need more practice and guidance to minimize grammatical and mechanical errors. This study shows that students' ability to write argumentative essays using Gemini AI in the fourth semester of English Language Education class A at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang developed very well, and students' ability to utilize this technology can be integrated as a supporting tool in teaching essay writing to improve their academic writing performance.
