Abstract

In the digital era, YouTube has become a powerful tool for enhancing students' reading comprehension in English learning. This study investigates the effect of YouTube on students’ reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 8 Bukittinggi. The research employs a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test method to measure students' vocabulary proficiency before and after being exposed to YouTube videos as a learning medium. The sample consists of students from class VIII.3, selected using cluster random sampling. Data analysis was conducted using statistical tests, including normality, homogeneity, and t-tests, to determine the significance of the results. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension after using YouTube videos as a learning tool. The average pre-test score was 60.24, while the post-test score increased to 75.93, indicating that YouTube effectively enhances reading comprehension acquisition. The statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test results, supporting the hypothesis that YouTube positively impacts reading comprehension. This study highlights the importance of digital media in English language education, particularly in reading comprehension. The research suggests that incorporating YouTube as a supplementary teaching tool can improve reading comprehension and overall language learning outcomes.
