Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the level of students' critical thinking skills before and after the implementation of the Critical Incident strategy in Social Studies learning and to examine its effect on improving the critical thinking skills ofseventh-grade students at MTsN 5 Padang Pariaman. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students of MTsN 5 Padang Pariaman in the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample was selected from the population and consisted of 23 students from Grade VII. The data collection instrument was a 30-item multiple-choice objective test that had been tested for validity and reliability. The alternative hypothesis stated that the Critical Incident strategy has an effect on students' critical thinking skills in Social Studies, while the null hypothesis stated that there is no effect of the Critical Incident strategy on students'critical thinking skills. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Critical Incident strategy in Social Studies learning effectively improved students' critical thinking skills. The mean pre-test score of the experimental group was 66.33, with the lowest score of 58 and the highest score of 74. After the treatment, the mean post-test score increased to 83.76, with the lowest score of 79 and the highest score of 100. Based on the hypothesis testing using SPSS version 20, the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000. Since 0.000 < 0.05, it was concluded that the alternative pypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected This study recommends the use of the Critical Incident strategy as an alternative instructional strategy to diversify classroom teaching methods in Social Studies, as it has a significant positive effect on improving students' critical thinking skills
