Abstract
Aifha Wihana Alfita 2026, An Analysis of Apology Speech Acts Produced by English Education Students Using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT). Thesis, English Tadris Department, Tarbiyah Faculty and Teacher Training, Universitas Islam Negeri Imam Bonjol Padang, 2026. This study examines the apology speech act strategies produced by sixthsemester English Education students at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, the strategy most frequently used, and how these strategies are linguistically realized across gender. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were obtained from 79 respondents (61 female, 18 male) through a Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT) and analyzed using Olshtain and Cohen's (1983) framework, focusing on Situation 1 (apologizing to a lecturer) and Situation 6 (apologizing to a classmate). Expression of Regret (IFID) was the dominant strategy in both situations (78/79 and 74/79), most often combined with Explanation or Account. Situation 6 showed more varied patterns (twelve versus six) and was the only context where Offer of Repair appeared. Female students tended to produce longer, more elaborated apologies through explanation or accountability, while male students favored brief, single-strategy apologies. These findings indicate that offense severity, social distance, and gender jointly shape students' apology strategies.
